Contributing Cloud 9 Photographers
The year 2003 was the Centennial of Flight. But for the sustained efforts of talented American and world-wide aviation enthusiasts photographers who have contributed to Cloud 9 Photography's image data bank, much of aviation history would not have been recorded on film, preserved for others to enjoy ... and to contemplate.
The individuals listed here have spent a substantial amount of their time, energy, and money to make the pictures that are part of Cloud 9's data bank. To make these pictures, many have endured extremes of hot and cold weather, security checks, bureaucratic snafus, and promising photo-ops that degenerated into a no-win goat rope. Despite such obstacles, the most determined persevered, honed their skills, and, over the years, threw out thousands of dollars in film and processing that yielded unsatisfactory results. If it were not for the private efforts of these dedicated few, which is usually a labor of intense love for things that fly, much of aviation history [military and civilian,] a remarkable history, would be lost forever. The serious private collector excels at preserving history whereas the government, aircraft manufacturers, and airlines have a tendency to incinerate it.
To make matters worse, unfortunately, the powers-to-be have too often cooperated more with writers, motion picture, or video equipped photojournalists than they have with still photographers who work independently without formal media credentials. As a result of this bias against non-credentialed still photographers, many opportunities to capture on film, to document and to preserve, aviation history, and to inspire others, have been lost forever.
It should be recognized that the photographs of these dedicated private photographers, almost all of whom work independently without formal media credentials, constitute profound, silent testimony to the fact that no writer can describe an airplane as effectively as a good photograph of one, plus, one other thing—no one needs a formal media credential to photograph an airplane well.
The world would be much poorer without the work of these photographers. I am pleased to showcase some of the finer work of certain photographers who deserve recognition and credit. All aviation enthusiasts owe a debt of gratitude to:
